From ‘Fixer-Upper’ to Contemporary Dream Home

From ‘Fixer-Upper’ to Contemporary Dream Home

Last summer, we got a call from a Bay View couple who was house hunting in Lake Country. They had toured a home on Lake Nagawicka that checked off many items on their wish list – plenty of square footage, large wooded lot and great location. Despite the advantages, it was outdated! They needed remodeling help to make it their ‘dream home’.

The Kowalske team toured the Delafield ‘fixer upper’ with the couple. The dated kitchen and master suite were at the top of their remodeling list. They had a distinct design style and wanted the space to have color and personality. After presenting them with a design plan to remodel the whole house, they purchased the home and began the project several months later.

  • Master suite: bedroom, bathroom & closet
  • Covert loft area into a new bedroom & full bathroom

Q: How did this project start? When did you call Kowalske Kitchen & Bath?

“We were living in Bay View at the time, but we were ready to buy our next home and put down roots. While house shopping, we discovered downtown Delafield and fell in love. We obsessively watched for homes. The market was insane and everything was going fast, so we knew we had to be open to a fixer upper. When we toured the house, it had some 80’s charm to it, but it was outdated. It had a few things on our “must have” list that we weren’t finding anywhere else – good sized house, close to a lake, wooded lot and big yard.

We saw the potential in remodeling the house and that’s when we called Kowalske Kitchen & Bath. From the very first call, we were impressed with Kowalske. We first talked with Matt Kowalske and he really put our minds at ease. The team toured the home and swept us off our feet with their enthusiasm and ideas. After seeing the design they created, there was no going back. Our mind was made up. We had to make it happen! We bought the house and started construction shortly after.”

Q: What was your “vision” of the home?

“In simple terms, we wanted mid-century modern, clean, cool and interesting. We didn’t want a house you could pick out of a brochure. We wanted something that made people say “Wow, what’s going on here?” Aside from that, we wanted a home that was cozy, a place where we could make a future. The Kowalske Team far exceeded our expectations by incorporating our ideas into an overall design plan. Kowalske gave us great ideas, was open to our feedback, answered all our questions, and helped with everything.”

We had a few crazy design ideas and the team was open to making them happen. We wanted gas burning lanterns outside the front door because they’re all over NOLA (a city we got engaged in) and Kowalske found them and made it happen.”

“We wanted wacky penny tile and a ‘powder room that screams’ and Kowalske said, ‘no problem, we’d love to do that for you!’”

Q: What did you like about the process?

“Seeing the house during the construction phase was exciting! We kind of knew what to expect but we were still blown away with each visit. Every time we had questions or needed help, Kowalske was there for us. It really was an emotional experience to go through.”

Q: What do you think of the end result?

“We love our house! It feels like we’re on vacation or living in a dream house. I think one of us says, ‘can you believe we live here?’ every night. The number of times someone said ‘oh my god’ after opening the front door are innumerable. We’ve given so many tours of the house and everyone says the same thing, ‘the transformation is breathtaking’.”
