Bungalow Kitchen Remodel
Kowalske Kitchen & Bath was hired as the remodeling contractor for this 1920s Wauwatosa craftsman bungalow kitchen. The homeowner wanted to update the original kitchen. It was outdated and showing wear. The goal was to match the traditional style of the home and gain more storage and counterspace.
Craftsman Bungalow Kitchen Layout
With less than 200 square feet, we needed to make the most of every square inch, without moving walls, windows or doors. The refrigerator moved to the opposite wall to give more counter space along the sink wall. We moved the range and mounted the microwave to give the client more counter space.
Workstation Sink
This kitchen features a workstation sink. Workstations are perfect for a small kitchen because the sliding platforms that hold bowls, colanders and cutting boards multiply your countertop by going deep instead of wide. You can chop, rinse, prep, dry dishes, hold hot dishes and cleanup after a meal more efficiently.
A dishwasher was on the homeowners’ wish list. We added a compact dishwasher drawer under the sink, hidden with an oak door panel. The dark quartz countertop mimics soapstone and fits the period of the home.
Handmade Tile

Custom Cabinets
Two-tone cabinets are a popular design trend in kitchen design. White upper cabinets lighten and brighten the space. We also used oak cabinets (lowers and pantry) to match and celebrate the original built-ins and trim in this home. The exposed cream city brick chimney adds charm and texture.
This craftsman bungalow kitchen was too small for a permanent island, so we recommended a movable island. The homeowners took on this project while we simultaneously remodeled the kitchen. An old dresser was refurbished into an island that can seat two people.
Homeowner Review
“We just remodeled our small Tosa kitchen. We love our home but the outdated kitchen space just wasn’t working for us anymore. We needed more counter space, a more efficient layout, and desperately wanted a dishwasher. We reached out to Kowalske after getting a recommendation from a friend.
The end result is AMAZING! We can’t believe this is our kitchen and we actually get to cook here – and we LOVE to cook together.
We enjoyed the expert advice from our designer on how to lay out the kitchen and make the best use of the space, while still keeping with the original character of the house. From the workstation sink to the space-saving dishwasher drawer, the resulting space is as functional as it is beautiful. Now we enjoy being in the kitchen even when we aren’t cooking! As part of the process, we got to help make some of the backsplash for our kitchen at a local pottery studio. Construction happened during the COVID-19 crisis and despite the challenges, the team kept the project on schedule while taking the appropriate safety precautions.
If you’re considering a remodel, call Kowalske. You get a magazine-worthy design, excellent work and a headache free remodel!”
