Contemporary Basement Finishing | Pewaukee, WI

This large Pewaukee basement wasn’t being used to its full potential. The residents – a couple with young children – had lived in this home for a few years and they wanted a warm and welcoming area for enjoying family time and entertaining friends. Kowalske transformed the basement of this newly built home into a sophisticated gathering place. This contemporary basement now features a bar, a video game room and an exercise room, with amenities like an electric fireplace and a wallpaper feature wall.

before after basement remodel

Highlights of the basement renovation:

  • Improved Layout: Before the remodel, the basement entrance felt like a long dark tunnel with a TV at the back wall. There wasn’t any visual interest to draw someone into the TV area. We added a cased opening with a transom window to define the hallway as separate from the bar area and make the area welcoming. Now the basement has defined and inviting spaces – with a bar area, a TV area, an exercise room, and a seating area.

  • Contemporary Design: The goal was to transform the basement area into a warm, welcoming and brighter space. In the kitchen, a mirror and sconces add light and an aesthetically-pleasing focal point to the space.

  • Basement with Wallpaper: For a pretty flair, contemporary black wallpaper in a bold pattern immediately draws your attention. A gold shelf provides storage for glasses and contrasts the cabinets that are dark black with a blue undertone.

  • Video Game Area with Storage: The father and his kids love to play video games so they wanted a space for this favorite activity. Low cabinets below the TV provide sleek storage for the video game consoles and controllers.
  • Basement Fireplace: We added an electric fireplace with a stone focal wall and wood mantel that will draw people into the space when they come down the stairs. The fireplace adds warmth to the basement and helps it feel like a primary living space in the home. There now is a lot of interest around the television with the fireplace, as well as the built-in cabinetry and floating shelves.

  • Classy & Functional Bar Area: The new basement bar area has a wet bar and refrigerator for easy entertaining. The metal legs on peninsula and metal bar shelves add an aesthetically-pleasing element. Shallow cabinets are perfect for glass storage.

  • Natural Light: We added a textured glass window to bring daylight from the exercise workout room into the TV area. This light and airy element was created to keep an open flow in this part of the basement. From a dark and enclosed area, the basement is now a go-to gathering place for family and friends with adequate light to draw everyone in.

Homeowner Review

“We used Kowalske Kitchen & Bath to update our basement. They were very easy to work with. Everyone involved was helpful from the design process to the construction in our home.

They were quick to address any issues that we had and were willing to work with us to make any changes necessary.

We loved the outcome and would definitely work with them again on future projects in our home!”
