Popular Basement Remodeling Trends
Explore today’s most popular design trends. Think of the basement as a separate living space. You might pick a different style from the rest of your house. Experiment and try something new. Many homeowners are looking for a warm, cozy space using raw or reclaimed wood, sliding barndoors, shiplap, stone and brick.
Other basement finishing ideas include luxury vinyl flooring, modern cabinets, walk-up bar/kitchenette, and exposed ceilings for an industrial vibe. Your basement renovation style depends on the functions of the room.
Kowalske’s design team will work with you to find the style that fits your unique tastes. For example, you might want a bright, eclectic look for a kid-friendly play zone. Want to watch the game with friends? Then try a sleek industrial look or rustic feel.
Smart Basement Design Ideas
Storage Needs
Storage is an essential component of most basements. We can design a space with shelving and storage solutions for books, games, toys, holiday decorations, seasonal items and more. Discuss the function of your area to discover custom cabinet options for your basement remodel.
Accessible Design
Are you planning on creating a new bedroom or need an accessible in-law apartment? Consider accessibility. Talk with our designers about unique needs like installing an accessible bathroom, expanding doorways, unique storage options like low cabinets and pull-out drawers, customized lighting, and adapting the space for visitors with specific needs.
Basement Remodeling Challenges
Basements have unique design challenges. Our designers can help you create a functional space that works around some of the quirks of basements – mechanical elements of the home (HVAC, electrical and pipes), low ceiling height, lack of natural light, damp conditions and cold temperatures. Be sure to hire a professional basement finishing contractor to address these critical issues.
Basements typically lack natural sunlight, so lighting design is essential. In our basement remodeling projects, we often utilize LED recessed lighting, pendant lights and LED strip lighting under shelves.
Consider the importance of insulation and plumbing when designing your basement remodel. A reputable contractor will inspect your basement for water damage and waterproof your basement. Enjoy your new basement without worrying about moisture and flooding.

What Our Customers Are Saying
“We had been talking about remodeling our basement for a long time, but decided to make it happen when my husband was offered a job working remotely. We wanted the area to feel open, light-filled, and modern – not an easy task for a previously dark and cold basement!
It was so fun to see how our designer was able to take our wish list and ideas from my Pinterest board, and turn it into a practical design. We were sold after seeing the design, and were pleasantly surprised to see that Kowalske was less costly than another estimate.”
– Stephanie (Wauwatosa)
“We had planned on finishing our basement and explored several options, but the project seemed overly complex and was put on hold. Once we contacted Kowalske, the turn key process simplified everything. Their professionals walked us through the entire process from the initial layout and design to final finish.
