Unfinished Basement to Contemporary Asian-Inspired Spa Wet Room Retreat

This Oconomowoc, WI basement wet room is a serene, contemporary retreat inspired by the calming atmosphere of an Asian spa. Designed around relaxation and functionality, the new wet room features a spacious shower area and built-in soaking tub, creating a peaceful space where the family can unwind and recharge at home.

Client Remodeling Goals

The homeowners wanted a calming and functional retreat that included:

• Room for both showering and bathing

• A warm, organic aesthetic

• Ample storage

The design focused on creating a spa-like experience through a combination of natural white oak, contrasting dark accents and layered lighting while maximizing functionality and storage. There is no toilet in this room to create a space that feels like a dedicated spa retreat.

Design Challenges & Creative Solutions

• Custom Wet Room Planning – The tub and shower area required meticulous measuring, planning and framing to achieve the final layout. Every element was carefully coordinated to create a seamless composition.

• Custom Quartz – Quartz pieces were custom-fabricated before construction began, allowing the materials to be precisely integrated into the wet room design and surrounding features.

Wet Room Design Highlights

• Wet Room Design – The large shower and built-in tub were brought together within one cohesive wet room, creating an open and spacious layout designed for both daily routines and relaxation.

• Contemporary Asian Spa Design – A serene combination of natural materials, clean lines and warm organic tones creates a calming, spa-inspired retreat. Natural wood, soft tones and contrasting accents creates a warm, organic atmosphere.

• Cohesive Tile – At least six different types of tile are thoughtfully layered throughout the wet room, including floor tile, shower floor tile, wall tile and shower niche tile. Variations in color, texture and pattern add depth and visual interest while maintaining a relaxing, cohesive feel.

• White Oak Vanity – A large white oak vanity provides ample storage for bathroom linens and personal care items.

• Murphy Door Storage – A cleverly designed bookshelf is actually a Murphy door that conceals the basement’s water heater without taking away from the room’s streamlined appearance.

• Dark Shower Niche – A dark shower niche adds depth and contrast to the room while providing convenient storage within the shower area.

• Hidden Ambient Lighting – Concealed lighting in the shower niche creates a soft, relaxing glow that enhances the atmosphere for evening showers and baths.

• Contemporary Black & Chrome Accents – Matte black hardware and lighting add contrast and definition, balancing the warmth of the white oak and reinforcing the contemporary design. Chrome plumbing fixtures add elegance to the space.
