Black & White Bathroom | Milwaukee, WI
The homeowners of this Milwaukee County 1920s home contacted Kowalske Kitchen & Bath for a bathroom remodel. Their hallway bathroom was deteriorating and they needed a functional bathroom for their boys. The new bathroom features heated floors, a large walk in-shower, an apron sink vanity, and penny round floor tile.
Project Goals
- Create a functional bathroom for two teen boys (large shower, countertop space & storage)
- Choose materials that honors the 1920s design aesthetic
- Durable materials & easy to clean
Challenges & Issues
- Radiator took up valuable space
- Demo involved removing the old tile, cast iron bathtub & tiled walls
- Update the old plumbing & window
- Move the toilet from the center of the room
Bathroom Features
- Historic Home – The design of this 1920s bathroom needed to fit the style of this 1920s Harry W. Page home.
- New Bathroom Layout – The old bathroom had two doorways, so we closed up one door and moved the vanity to that wall. The toilet moved from the middle of the room to a more convenient corner.
- Walk-In Shower – A large walk-in shower with two shower heads replaces the old bathtub. A niche in the shower provides storage for bottles and soap.
- Vintage Tile – Black and white tile maintains the vintage charm of the home. The floor is penny rounds and the wall tile is glossy white subway tile.
- Heated Floors – The radiator under the window took up a lot of floor space, so we replaced it with in-floor radiant heat to evenly heat the room.
- Vanity with Countertop Space – The vanity is an inset cabinet with midnight blue finish with a wall-mount Kohler faucet in matte black. A wall cabinet above the toilet provides storage for towels.
- Lacemaker Lamp Lighting – Vintage sconces in a chrome finish flank the oval matte black mirror.
