Lake-Inspired Entertaining Kitchen
This Delafield, WI lake home received a complete transformation, turning a small, dated kitchen into a bright, and airy space. This modern coastal design features shades of blue, sandy beige cabinetry and gold finishes. The new layout connects the kitchen, dining areas and outdoor deck, capturing natural light and the stunning lake view. Every detail was carefully chosen by the Kowalske design team to create the ultimate kitchen for a retired couple who love to entertain.
Project Goals
The retired homeowners wanted a kitchen that would bring everyone together, both indoors and on the deck.
- Open the Kitchen – Connect the kitchen, dining, and living areas so friends and family could gather.
- Capture the Lake Views – Flood the space with natural light and preserve sightlines from every angle.
- Function & Storage – Incorporate flexible seating, efficient work zones and smart storage.

Features of this Kitchen
- Open Concept Layout – We removed the wall between the kitchen and formal dining room and widened openings to the sunroom, creating one unified space.
- Artisan Backsplash – Quiet veining on the Cambria countertops allows the hand-cut marble backsplash, inspired by sand dollars, to become the centerpiece of the kitchen. The backsplash is featured at the buffet cabinet and beverage station.
- Large Multifunction Island – A 4-foot prep station with an induction cooktop, integrated seating and generous work space supports both cooking and entertaining.
- 3 Separate Sinks – This kitchen has three separate sinks, each for a different purpose. The main workstation sink next to the cooktop is for food preparation (washing and chopping food). The secondary sink (next to the dishwasher) is a wash station for dishes. A third bar sink at the beverage station provides sink access to guests.
- New Coffee & Beverage Station – The old desk area was transformed into a welcoming built-in coffee station and bar area for guests.
- Custom Storage – To keep the kitchen clutter free, we incorporated hidden trash and recycling, utensil and spice pullouts, peg systems for dishes and grilling tools, and an appliance garage.
- Modern Coastal Finishes – Stained white oak cabinets, navy accents and warm neutral walls create a balanced, inviting palette that feels like a lake retreat.
- Airy Lighting – Glass-globe and rope-accented fixtures provide light without obstructing the lake views.
Challenges & Issues
- Site Constraints – Lake setback regulations required the design to stay within the original footprint.
- Planning Considerations – The need to preserve lake views required careful planning and custom solutions.
- Hidden Post – An existing structural post was concealed inside a custom double oven cabinet.
