Mother In-Law Suite Addition - Okauchee Lake, WI

Mother In-Law Suite Addition

in-law bathroom addition

Accessible In-Law Suite Addition | Nashotah, WI

Kowalske designed this cozy, spa-like in-law suite addition on Okauchee Lake to be wheelchair accessible. The family wanted the mother in-law to have her own space (living room, bedroom and bathroom). The bathroom is accessible with a walk-in bathtub, zero entry shower, grab bars and non-slip flooring. Color and texture make this bathroom inviting with calming green-blue cabinets, chrome finishes and organic tile.

Highlights of this Accessible Bathroom

  • Accessible Features – The bathroom is designed so that the mother in-law can age in place, allowing for wheelchair accessibility. Features include: grab bars, a zero entry shower, a walk-in bathtub, handheld showerhead, non-slip flooring and more.
  • Walk-in Bathtub The first item chosen for this bathroom was the Kohler walk-in bath. We selected a marble-look engineered stone material for the wall surround. The bathtub has a 3″ threshold for easy entry, hand shower, hydrotherapy, air jets, heated backrest and grab bar.
  • Transitional Design – The bathroom is inviting with a turquoise green-blue shade on the wall, cabinets and in the shower niche. The home is on the lake and features shades of blue throughout. While the rest of the home is more contemporary, this space is transitional with chrome finishes and traditional crown molding on the cabinets.
  • Large ADA Zero Entry Shower This in-law suite addition has a zero entry walk-in shower that can accommodate a wheelchair. The curbless entry has no step to allow easy access. A handheld showerhead is available on a sliding rail. The grab bar and storage niche can be accessed from standing or a wheelchair.
  • Shower Tile – All of the bathroom shower tile is ceramic, with a small basketweave on the floor to prevent slips and easy access for a wheelchair. The wall tile is a textured subway tile in shades of gray and off-white in a basketweave pattern. The storage niche is tiled in a high gloss turquoise zellige tile that matches the vanity.
  • Custom Vanity – Green-blue inset cabinets are paired with a white countertop. A makeup vanity allows the mother in-law to sit and get ready. A pullout drawer includes a heated tool storage and a tall linen cabinet hides towels and bath items.
  • Heated Tile Floors – The bathroom floor is a porcelain tile with a textured travertine look. It has an old European look with uneven edges. In-floor heat keeps the bathroom comfortable.
  • Lighting – The lights in this in-law suite addition include recessed lights and a simple, easy-to-clean fixture over the bathroom sink.
