1. Green Custom Cabinetry for the Kitchen

Blue cabinets gained popularity this past decade and we don’t see them leaving. Rich green custom cabinetry in the kitchen is a big movement, as people are moving toward warmer colors. Green is earthy, fresh and organic. Green sets off natural stain colors beautifully and also plays a great grounding complement to white upper cabinets. Mixing cabinet colors and blending warm and cool tones will become a bigger movement in the next decade as well.

2. Furniture Style Cabinetry & Caning Inserts

bathroom design trend
This custom linen cabinet furniture piece features caning inserts to allow air flow into the cabinets.

Custom cabinetry will also gain popularity in the bathroom. The bathroom linen cabinet will start to look more like a furniture piece and be customized to the specific storage that a client is needing in their bathroom. Cabinetry will become more decorative with spaces to display attractive storage. Instead of having glass in cabinet doors, we will see more caning inserts. Caning is a natural fiber material and provides a beautiful screen for the interior of a cabinet while playing with the more natural elements that we will continue to see in bathroom design.

3. Kitchen Workstation Sinks

The sink workstation is where you can do everything from chop, rinse, prep, dry, hold hot dishes, and clean up after a meal in one easy spot.

The kitchen sink has really expanded its potential in the past decade. Companies such as The Galley have completely changed how we work in our kitchen by bringing the sink front and center. This sink is a large, comprehensive workspace where you can do everything from chop, rinse, prep, dry, hold hot dishes and cleanup after a meal in one easy spot. This type of innovation is one that will continue to change kitchen design for decades to come. In the future, everyone will find the kitchen workstation as much of a standard as a dishwasher or microwave.

4. Backsplashes with Color & Texture

kitchen tile trend
A hexagon tiled backsplash makes a bold statement in this contemporary Wauwatosa kitchen.

A tile backsplash is an easy way to add color and texture to a kitchen. You can also add a backsplash to the wall behind open cabinetry, floating shelves or glass doors. Think of your backsplash as a way to show your style and personality. The options are endless – stone, porcelain, marble, glass and more. While white kitchens will always be in style, we are seeing clients willing to take more risks with color, patterns, shapes and finishes. A Kowalske designer can help you choose a unique backsplash to suit your space.

5. Wetrooms – The ‘New’ Bathroom

Wetrooms have been a standard in Europe and are rapidly becoming popular for bathroom remodels in the United States. A wetroom combines both the shower and bathtub in one area. Keeping in trend with the minimalist design, it is an efficient use in small areas. Get rid of bulky tubs and oversized showers and say hello to a sleek, easy-to-clean look. Not to mention a “wow” factor for your home.

6. Custom Minimalist Range Hoods

hood trend
This custom minimalist hood is trimmed with wood and accent tile.

You’ve probably seen metal hoods or wood hoods  in a kitchen. We don’t see statement hoods going out of style. But we do predict that you’ll see more custom minimalist hoods in the next decade. These hoods are made out of drywall and are designed to be simple and clean. It works with many styles – farmhouse, contemporary or transitional design. If a plain white box is too simple for you, consider adding interest with tile, wood, shiplap, trim or metal accent.

7. The Curbless Shower

In the next decade, you’re going to see more curbless showers. This is a beautiful design aesthetic, making the bathroom feel open and larger. With a glass shower door, a zero threshold shower also gives the design clean lines and a chance to showcase the tilework. With no curb or step, these showers are perfect for homeowners looking for accessible spaces for aging-in-place. Add a bench, grab bars and hand-held shower to make showering safer and easier.

8. Pet-Friendly Spaces

We are seeing more clients wanting to incorporate their pets into the design of their home. Making a designated spot for pet food storage and food/water bowls give any kitchen a clean, sleek look. When remodeling your home, it’s important to consider all your storage needs and functionality of the space. We can help you design a creative solution that makes it easy for your pet and convenient for you.
